Preparing to fly comfortably

It is important to be comfortable when you fly. This becomes more important when the journey is long. When you are packing for your trip, you should make sure that you are caring for this portion of your trip. Having a bad flight experience can start your trip off or end it on the wrong foot. A few key essentials that I carry with me include:

  • Sweatshirt – The worst experience is a cold flight, which most of them are. This is especially true if you have a window seat. A sweater or sweatshirt works well to help you adjust for the temperature.
  • Eye mask – Particularly if you are on a long or overnight flight, you will want to have an eye mask handy. It will help you shut out the light and catch some Zs.
  • Noise canceling headphones – Noise canceling headphones are great for blocking out the noise in the airplane so that you can concentrate on a little work or sleep. As a bonus, they will double as regular headphones for music and movies.
  • Pillows – Depending on your body and the length of the flight, you will want one or more pillows to help make you comfortable. I personally have lower back pain at times and carry a McKenzie lumbar support pillow for flights over 3 hours to support my back. The one pillow I would recommend for every traveler is a neck pillow, that is unless you like getting cozy with your neighbor. There are several companies that make inflatable neck pillows that pack up quite small.
  • Blanket – For long and overnight flights, I pack my own travel blanket. I have a super soft blanket by NAP that does the trick. Like the sweatshirt, the blanket will keep you warm and make you feel cozy and relaxed.
  • Compression socks – For longer flights, I highly recommend compression socks or compression leggings. Either way, long flights can be bad for your circulation (especially if you sleep most of the flight and don’t get up and move).
  • Fuzzy socks – While fuzzy socks are a not necessity, on a long overnight flight fuzzy socks can feel so nice! Again I trust my travel comfort to NAP.
  • Hydrate – The most important advice for long haul flights is to stay hydrated. Airplane air can be very dry so drink plenty of water and have both lotion and lip balm handy. If you tend to get dry eyes, saline solution is handy as well.
