Hawaii is an amazing chain of islands. I like to think of it as a paradise with FDA approval : ) However, seeing all islands in one trip or at least the most popular would take a long trip OR a cruise. Going from island to island requires a flight, which can be time consuming. When deciding how you would like to see Hawaii it is important to know a little bit about each island.
Cruising: A great way to see all the top tourist spots in Hawaii is to take a cruise. There are several options that you can choose from. If you have two weeks or more, you can cruise from the California. While your cruise fare would be a bit more, if you don’t like flying this is the way to go. If you have less time, there is also an option that leaves out of Honolulu.
Oahu: This is a great starter island if you have never been to Hawaii before. Oahu is where Honolulu is located and Pearl Harbor. Waikiki Beach is a popular destination as well. The most populated and expensive of the islands, Oahu will have the most to do as far as variety of activities. There are secluded areas to the island, but in general the Honolulu area is like NYC on the beach.
The Big Island: This is the island with the volcanos. The biggest and youngest of all the islands, The Big Island is less populated than Oahu. The volcanos are the biggest attraction here because a large portion of the island is forested. There are black sand beaches here as well – which are kind of cool. Most activities here will be outdoorsy.
Kauai: If you want a relaxed vacation, this is your island. Kauai is the garden island and is 100% beauty and mostly uninhabited. There are many outdoors activities, but things tend to close down early in this sleepy island. You can do helicopter rides at any of the islands, but in Kauai you can see familiar scenic views from many films, such as Jurassic Park. With sites like the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon, Kauai is a natural wonder.
Maui: The last of the four larger islands, Maui is known for its beaches. Beaches on Maui are always among the top 10 beaches in the world. It is definitely populated with hotels, but also very peaceful. Again activities here will be of the outdoors or spa nature. In general, if you want someplace to hang out on the beach with your honey, Maui is the spot.
